3m volunteers to join police on patrol

Three million members of Rela, the people’s volunteer corps, the Civil Defence Department and non-governmental organisations will join police on patrol throughout the country, Home Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Mahmood Adam said today.

He said the integrated operations would be launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak on August 1.

He was confident that the support of volunteers would enable police to reduce the rate of crimes such as theft and housebreaking, as shown by the example of several developed countries.

The volunteers would be given exposure and training for the work, especially during weekends, Mahmood told reporters at a gathering of Rela members here.

He said the preservation of public order and safety and the curbing of crime were the joint responsibility of all citizens and not just the police.

He said the Rela membership had touched three million, indicating the people’s growing awareness of their responsibility in creating a peaceful and harmonious country.
