The Health Ministry is looking into the issue of regulating the use of corrosive substances such as acid, in wake of the liquid splashing incidents in the Klang Valley since early March.

Deputy Minister Datuk Rosnah Abd Rashid Shirlin said the ministry viewed the matter as urgent and that drastic action was needed.

"There needs to be control, not only on acid but other harmful substances, the use of which could be abused.

"However, the ministry would have to look at the implementation mechanisms, including the technical aspects. God willing, something will be done soon," she told reporters here Wednesday, after presenting 1Malaysia computer netbooks to 1,844 students.

Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil recently said she would propose to the Cabinet the need for more stringents laws controlling the sale and purchase of acid.

Her statement was in reference to the spate of acid attacks in the Klang Valley and other areas, especially targeting women. Police have received more than 20 reports of such incidents.
